February 2023 summary

Updated: Apr 6, 2023

Here’s what happened in February!

AnimO welcomed its first hawk, surrendered by owners that couldn’t handle her. They bought her from a shop that gave them improper information, she was described as a “flying dog” that is “suitable for beginners.” I have experience with both hawks and dogs and I can tell you this is completely wrong! Hawks are apex predators and they are absolutely wild animals.

We also welcomed some rats, two adults (possibly pregnant, not sure yet) and a litter of small babies. Hand feeding babies is always a challenge, but the lack of sleep is worth it.

Kawasaki-san, our amazing handyman, is acting as an extension of AnimO and taking on the care of some of the more common animals (chickens, goats, doves, pigeons, budgies, and some of the tortoises). This frees up my own resources a little more for some upcoming projects like building new enclosures and hopefully enabling me to take in a few more animals that are in bad shape but don’t have anywhere else to go.

Rick, one of the fearful brother dogs that came here last year, is now in foster care. More organizations and people are able to handle dogs than exotic animals, so this is also part of my effort to refocus on the animals that don’t have anywhere else they can go.

I was a surgical assistant for my first neuter surgery! Dr. Kondo came with her mobile clinic to neuter Bruno and teach me about the procedure. This is a skill I’ve been hoping to learn for a while, and I’m finally doing it! Bruno is recovering well.

In social media news, my TikTok channel has almost 1000 subscribers now! You can find that here: https://www.tiktok.com/@animo.animal.sanctuary

If you know someone who wants to support AnimO, or if you want to help more, there are lots of ways!
